Tony,
I spent some time with the Royal Dutch Marines and various infantry elements when I was stationed in Holland. The Dutch role in NATO (or even WWII) is often overlooked by military historians. Holland's role remains vital in NATO, and during the Cold War was systemic to a broad-based coalition effort to stop or buffer a predicted Soviet invasion.
Feel free to post anything CW related to Dutch Forces!
Regards, Mick

Good morning all,
I just want to add a reminder about something else re the Dutch and the Cold War......as part of my early AM ramblings.
The Dutch didn't leave Indonesia until as late as 1963. There were transition disputes about western New Guinea (Iranian Barat [it now has a new name...something like Papa something]).
Buried between the Korean War and the Vietnam War, the US had a secret war against Indonesia's Surkarno and the P.K.I. (Indon. Communist Party). US pilot Allen Pope was shot down and captured thus exposing to the public this hidden Cold War flareup. I know little about this aspect of the Cold War but had heard of Dutch "involvement" helping the Americans. The Americans were based in the Phillippines (Subic, Clark, Cubi Point) and the Dutch were locally based.
Another aspect of the Dutch contribution to the Cold War:
The Netherlands has 3 islands next to Venezuela. On Aruba, besides it's famous tourist destination status, there's the huge oil refinery. Petrol is the West's lifeblood and this industry has it's own specific history about it's Cold War contributions.
Full disclosure:
I've consumed beer from both green and brown bottles. No regrets; loved it.
Warm regards,
Bob

That's a bit of history I didn't know. I'm glad you posted that bit of information. I'll see if I can find something to read up on it. Have a good one. Take care.

Dutch Veterans Memorial Day in Zoetermeer june 30, 2012. The Moto Guzzi motorcycle (Dutch MP red windshield, white helmet and white coat) who appears at 00:45, that's me. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFONRyjx4kgThis parade is a mix of WW2 and postwar vehicles. I will look for more updates, including from the National Veterans Day in The Hague 30 June 2012. Warm regards, Tony
