Good morning all,
In my intro, I mentioned a civilian organization that's part of Cold War history. Specifically: "CRAF", the Civil Reserve Air Fleet.
In case of a WWIII, there's geometric expansion of just about everything.
The US Defense Dept developed a reserve, auxillery, "civilian" fleet (Please don't laugh) to augment the USAF's Military Airlift Command. This was "CRAF".
CRAF was composed of US civil air carriers which had committed themselves by contract to auxment MAC in case of all Hades breaking out - WWIII. In general, one should not generalize, however, the basics distilled down to if a US carrier wanted US military business, they must commit to CRAF.
Something I find interesting is that the program had a system of ranks, like militaries throughout NATO, etc. In case of activation, the President/CEO of an airline would get the rank of General, the air crews had ranks also. A ramp baggage attendant was NCO-level. Somewhere here I have the chart.
There were some other civilian programs like CRAF. The entire economy.....the entire society.....was ready for mobilization.
Warm regards,
Bob
