The French Indochina War (1945-54) was the first shot across the proverbial bow in the Cold War, against worldwide Communism (especially Marxist influence in France). The French Empire, hobbled by WWII, sent nearly 250,000 personnel to Indochina (modern Vietnam) where she lost nearly 92,000 men, the end coming at the fateful bastion of Dien Bien Phu, 7 May 1954.
Today, ANAI, serves as the main arbiter of remembrance for this war, known to the French as 'la soublie guerre d'indochine' (the Forgotten War in Indochina). Before an American Marine had stepped ashore in Da Nang, the French had been fighting Communists for nearly 10 years. (Her partisan commanders of the GCMA would still be fighting in Northern Vietnam with loyal Viet guerilla's against the Communists well into the late 60's).
This war is neither covered in text books or by modern American or French historians, mainly due to the Marxist influence in both the U.S. and France, particularly among American military historians who have an unfettered love affair with Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap.
[ This observance of Dien bien phu does not come without protest. In 2010 a small group of veterans laid a wreath at the Vietnam War Memorial (built by ARVN veterans) in "Little Saigon", Houston, Texas honoring the brave French, French Union, Foreign Legion and loyal Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian battalions that fought Communism in Indochina. We then incurred the internecine wrath of anti-French/pro-Communist Vietnamese in Houston, where viet cong sympathizers still operate, according to our South vietnamese ARVN couterparts. We have since moved our memorial to the Bear Creek Park War Memorial Site. Like the Vietnamese who protest the arrival of the Communist Vietnamese leader to Houston several years ago, our group refuses to remain silent as well. ]
Anyone may participate with us. Our ceremony takes only 45 minutes. Afterwards, we repair to a local French restaurant for dinner and adult beverages.
